Week 19

Sunday, May 8
Polonia SC vs Manhattan Kickers (0-1)
The Manhattan Kickers secured their place in Division 1 next season with a 1-0 win over Polonia SCMustafa Mohamandi scored the only goal of the match in the 2nd minute off an 18-yard strike. The Kickers’ defensive effort allowed the team to maintain its shape and cover the narrow McCarren Park ground.

“We had limited chances, Polonia played well but could not get many chances in our final third. Looking forward to building on this on a weekly basis,” head coach Bryan Baracaldo said after the game.

The Kickers look to end the season strong with another game against already relegated Beyond FC this weekend.

Beyond FC is officially dropping to Division 2 following the conclusion of the 2021/22 season. The loss to New York Athletic Club officially means the New Jersey side cannot escape the relegation zone.

Kelmendi FC NY vs FC Sandžak (0-1)

FC Sandzak narrowly edged Kelmendi FC NY, 1-0, on Sunday. Kelmendi sits in 10th place just outside of the relegation zone. But with Stal Mielec NY also losing on Sunday the chance of being overtaken by the end of the regular season is looking less likely.

Richmond County FC vs New York Shamrock SC (1-3)

Richmond County FC was knocked out of first place contention after falling to New York Shamrock SC, 3-1, on Sunday. Last season’s Division 1 champion had goals from Christian UyRaphael Carvalho, and James Whyte.

"I couldn’t ask more from the whole squad tonight,” said Rocks head coach Stu Colbert. “I felt we dominated from start to finish against a dangerous Richmond side. We controlled possession and tempo and some of the football we played was outstanding.”

Uy and Carvalho traded goal of the game contenders in the first half. The first was a strike from the edge of the box that curved into the netting. Carvalho answered with a full volley from 25 yards into the top corner that left the keeper with no chance. Whyte headed in a Eli Vovsha in the second half to seal the result.

Richmond were awarded a penalty while trailing 2-0 that was saved by Rocks’ keeper Jahdea Gildin. They did knock in a consolation goal late in second half stoppage time to make it 3-1.

Stal Mielec NY vs Borgetto FC (0-2)
Borgetto FC remained in the title hunt thanks to a 2-0 win over Stal Mielec NY. The match was called prior to halftime by the referee due to unrest from the Stal sideline. Any additional updates will be announced at a later date.

Borgetto’s goals were scored by John Sebastian and reserve team player Timoleon Deliyannis.

Zum Schneider FC 03 II vs Hoboken FC 1912 (2-5)

It was an extremely difficult and tense match between Zum Schneider FC 03 II and Hoboken FC 1912. Hoboken was in a must-win situation if they wanted to win the Division 1 title this season. For Zum, while there is no chance for silverware the team has impressed this spring and is looking to finish in the Top 4.

After 90 minutes, 1912 walked away with three points and a definite claim to the table’s top spot.

“We did a good job of controlling the pace and flow of the match and finding solutions when our backs were against the wall in certain phases of the match,” head coach Steve Korfiatis explained after the game.

Hoboken’s early success led to a goal by Kevin Halliday off a cross from James Reed. Zum responded after a goalkeeper mistake allowed them to retain possession and finish in similar fashion from close range. However, 1912 didn’t leave the game tied for long. Camilo Rosero found space and crossed to James Reed who opportunistically finished before the keeper could get to the ball. They finished the first half with what Korfiatis described as possibly the most well crafted team goal of the season. Close possession led to a quick switch of play from Tommy Lozowski to Anthony Carracino who played a phenomenal one time ball to Camilo to finish from close range.

Zum started the second half with a goal to cut the lead to 3-2 and kept the pressure on for the first 20 minutes. Their break came when a flick from Bzdek put James through who was fouled outside the box. The Zum player was sent off for taking down the last man and Hoboken re-took control of the game. They went on to score two more goals; a volley from James Reed off a header by Evan Reed before Sean Fahy sealed the match with an assist to Joseph Braun.

Hoboken has possibly a championship deciding match this weekend against Richmond County FC. A win would mean only Borgetto FC could overtake them on points (though Hoboken has the tiebreaker via head-to-head results). A loss would tie Richmond and Hoboken on point for first place (though any result besides a 3+ goal loss would give Hoboken the tiebreaker). That result would also give Borgetto a chance to jump up and match the two other teams on points as well.
